In history, we often talk about the importance of identifying the biases of the historian. I’m not writing history, but it’s nice to know a little bit about the author of any piece of literature, not that I would actually call this great literature, or even literature at all.

I’m a nineteen year old girl, and Canadian. More specifically, I hail from the city of Edmonton, Alberta, where I am attending the University of Alberta. You may have guessed that my field of study is history. Otherwise, I have a number of other interests, including religion, politics, education, and like most teenagers these days, television. While I do currently attend school in Canada, I am also in the process of becoming a dual, American citizen, but that process will take some time. I lived in Indiana for six years before returning to Edmonton to go to University, and still call it ‘home’.

When you’re reading my blog, my biases will probably become immediately evident to you, but I might as well spell them out here, to save you the trouble.

While I am interested in religion, I do not practice or believe in it. I am an atheist. Books on the top of my recommended reading list right now are Richard Dawkins’ The God Delusion and Sam Harris’s The End of Faith. I do not believe in the Christian god or any other god. I whole heartedly support the use of logic and reason in a world that seems, right now, to be complete without any sort of reason or rationality. And yes, in case you were wondering, I do accept the truth of evolution. I wholeheartedly support science and all forms of scientific investigation.

You may have guessed where my politics lay, as well. I am a bleeding-heart, pinko commie liberal, and yes, I am proud of it. I support public health-care and think the primary duty of any government is to protect and care for its citizens — not that any modern government does. I support neither Stephen Harper nor George W. Bush.

Not that my sexual orientation is actually any of your business, but if I didn’t spell it out here, you’d figure it out anyway: yeah, I’m queer. And as I said, I am trying to lay out of my biases, and that one is fairly important. In case you couldn’t guess, and you probably could, I also support gay marriage. Go figure.

Blog

A lot of my previous blogs, and there have been several, have been primarily concerned with pop-culture and insignificant daily events, along the lines of “Jessica Alba is really hot” (she is!) and “today I talked to my friend on the phone, and it was really fun, and…” While this one will probably talk to some extent about television and other forms of mass entertainment, as well as daily occurances, I will attempt to make it more interesting than some of my other rambles. Unlike my blogs in community-based centres like LiveJournal, where the point is to make friends instead of alienating people, this blog will be an outlet discussions about school, politics, religion and atheism, gay rights issues, and anything else I feel like talking about. For the most part you will not find memes or internet quizzes.

“Comme vous êtes abruptes”?

You probably noticed that the title of this blog is French. The direct translation of the phrase is something along the lines of “my, aren’t you abrupt?” and it’s something my French teacher in high school used to say. What he meant was that I had a tendency to interrupt, and to be opinionated, obnoxious and abrasive. I don’t deny it. All I can really say is: get used to it.
